Restaurant vs Supermarket Receipts: OCR Challenges and Better Capture
Not all receipts fail in the same way. Restaurant checks and supermarket slips look similar at first glance, but they usually break OCR for different reasons. When you understand those differences, you can capture a better image, reduce extraction errors, and spend less time fixing line items before splitting the total.
Why restaurant receipts confuse OCR
Restaurant receipts are often short, narrow, and printed on thermal paper that fades quickly. They can also include dense abbreviations, modifiers, and duplicate-looking rows. A single item might include quantity, size, and notes on different lines. One line can say "2 x Pasta" while the next line only shows a price. If the photo is slightly blurred or overexposed, OCR can misread decimal separators, currency symbols, or letters that look like numbers.
Another challenge is layout compression. Many restaurant checks push important totals close to tax and tip lines. If the image is cropped too aggressively, OCR may lose context and merge unrelated values. This matters in bill splitting because the app must distinguish item prices from summary rows. A clear, full-frame image gives the extraction model better structure to work with.
Why supermarket receipts fail differently
Supermarket receipts are usually longer, with many item rows and abbreviations designed for POS systems. Product names can be truncated and packed with numeric identifiers. Discounts, loyalty adjustments, and bundle pricing can appear in separate lines far from the original item. This creates two common OCR problems: row misalignment and noisy context.
Long receipts are also harder to photograph evenly. The top might be sharp while the bottom is out of focus or shadowed. Curved paper adds perspective distortion, especially when the receipt is held in one hand. For OCR, slight distortion across a long document can cause repeated reading mistakes near the bottom, where tax totals and final sums are often placed.
Capture settings that improve both cases
You do not need a professional scanner to improve OCR reliability. Most gains come from predictable capture habits. Place the receipt on a flat, matte surface. Keep the camera parallel to the paper. Fill the frame with the receipt but keep all edges visible. Avoid flash hotspots and overhead glare. If your device has live focus lock, pause for one second before taking the photo.
For long supermarket slips, take two shots if necessary: one complete image and one detail image of the totals area. Use the complete image for primary extraction and the detail image for manual verification if needed. For restaurant receipts, ensure tip and tax lines are visible even if you mostly care about line items, because these values affect split expectations.
A practical verification flow before splitting
A fast verification flow prevents awkward corrections later. Start with three checks. First, compare extracted total against the visible total on the receipt. Second, quickly scan for obvious line-item anomalies like repeated prices or missing first items. Third, verify quantity patterns (for example, rows that include "2 x" or "3 x") to ensure grouped items were interpreted correctly.
If one section looks wrong, rescan immediately while the receipt is still available. Re-scanning is often faster than editing many items by hand. In group scenarios, this is especially important because even small extraction drift can change how fair the split feels to participants.
